Curriculum Overview - Art

Art Vision

The Art department believes that Art is a vital and integral part of every pupil’s education. It provides them with opportunities to develop a range of skills in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of Art in our society.

Art contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, confidence, judgement, and self-reflection. Moreover, it enables pupils to develop a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them and therefore links strongly to our school core values “A life in all its fullness” John 10:10.

There is a focus in developing proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding the formal elements, all with the overall aim of developing a rigorous understanding, critical awareness and inspiration of Art and Design.

We believe that Art lessons should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, providing them with the ability to invent and create their own individual pieces of Art. Students will explore many different artists, cultures, materials and techniques, building their confidence and refining their skills in order to produce artwork that they are proud of.

Enrichment Opportunities

The Art department offer a range of enrichment opportunities. Trips and Workshops link to the curriculum and further enhance pupil learning. Previous trips have included Tynemouth aquarium with Year 8, linking to the Marine life project. In Year 9 pupils visit The Baltic Art gallery, The Glasshouse Centre for music and Angel of The North, as part of their Architecture project.

At KS4 we have excellent links with Northern School of Art and GCSE pupils attend taster days. This allows pupils to experience activities based on specialist courses available.

Alongside external trips, we also encourage workshops within school. The workshops are often aimed at introducing new skills and career links, led by specialists within their field.

After school clubs are held weekly for both KS3 and KS4 pupils.

What is a art lesson like at St Aidan's?

Art is one of my favourite subjects; I really enjoy the opportunity to be creative and produce artwork based on topics that are personal and important to me. We explore lots of different materials and techniques in our lessons, in Year 9 this included collage, mono printing and Sculpture. I am proud of the GCSE portfolio I have produced and look forward to my lessons.

Through my Art lessons I have learnt about topics such as Architecture, Portraiture and Street Art. We have studied a wide variety of artists and movements and this really helps to inspire me. I enjoy working in my sketchbook and I find my lessons enjoyable and relaxing.
