Curriculum Overview KS4 Dance

Intent

At St Aidan’s CE Academy, we want Dance to be an enjoyable and enriching experience that provides an array of opportunities for all pupils. Dance supports with many aspects of physical, personal, social, moral, cultural and emotional elements of pupil progression.  The Dance qualification and experience allows for expression, communication, and collaboration and helping to build positive relationships with others while gaining a strong understanding of the dance world and wider performing arts sector. The Dance qualification also provides opportunities for pupils to develop their physical and mental confidence. Furthermore, is develops pupils' resilience, and respect for themselves and others. Additionally, the course also supports their health, fitness, mental health and well-being, with this being something they can implement into their lives beyond KS4, regardless of their chosen progression route.

Implementation

The Dance KS4 curriculum is designed to allow all pupils at St Aidan’s a range of opportunities.

The BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts Dance strand gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific applied knowledge and skills through realistic vocational contexts. Learners will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in the following areas-

  • development of key skills that prove their aptitude in performing arts, such as reproducing repertoire and responding to stimuli
  • processes that underpin effective ways of working in the performing arts, such as development of ideas, rehearsal and performance
  • attitudes that are considered most important in the performing arts, including personal management and communication
  • knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, processes and attitudes in the sector, such as roles, responsibilities, performance disciplines and styles

Impact

Throughout The Dance qualification we offer a KS4 curriculum that is appropriate and beneficial to each individual learner, allowing all learners to achieve. Pupils are provided with a balance of individual activities, along with opportunities to collaborate and work as a part of a team.

Study of the qualification as part of Key Stage 4 learning will help learners to make more informed choices for further learning, either generally or in this sector. The choices that learners can make post-16 will depend on their overall level of attainment and their performance in the qualification.
