Drama Curriculum Overview

Rationale

Throughout the academic year, pupils explore the challenge, diversity and wonder of Drama through a variety of themes, genres and Theatre in Education. Pupils continue developing confidence and explore the perimeters of the drama space, voice and movement. Enjoyment and acquisition of skills underpin the schemes of learning. In terms of cultural capital the skills, education, values, understanding and behaviours that are acquired by each pupil will develop their intellect and life chances. Trips to local theatres, interactive museums, and creative arts colleges are experienced by pupils too.

Intent

Pupils will have the opportunity to hone their analytical and creative skills in reading a variety of texts and to experiment with them. They will also formulate their own ideas about controversial issues, such as teenage and family life, crime and punishment, escapism while developing their performance skills through exploring drama practitioners and theatrical styles.

Implementation

Pupils will identify the main themes that reoccur throughout a variety of scripts and see how they can reflect the social, cultural and historical contexts in which they are written. They will continue to explore how playwrights control tension and suspense through the control of language choice and structure while analysing the impact of a dramatic narrative and authorial intentions. They will then experiment with different narrative viewpoints and create convincing characters and settings.

Impact

Underpinned by cultural capital elements set out in the Rationale above, pupils will continue to develop their reading, writing and oracy skills through structured tasks that will enable them to hone in on their areas of improvement. Confidence in the key areas of reading, writing and oracy are at the centre of the scheme of learning with the intention of acquiring new skills in language identification and evaluation of impact on a reader and audience. Equally, skills in writing with emphasis on higher tier vocabulary and use of this vocabulary for impact is enhanced through discussion and debate throughout the tasks and the assessments set out in the scheme of work.
