Building My Skills

Introduction to Building My Skills

Throughout the 2018/19 academic year, St Aidan’s CE Academy Year 10 pupils participated in Building My Skills.

Building My Skills is a free employability programme which provided Academy pupils with access to careers and employability skills guidance through regular timetabled engagement. The programme was coordinated by Esh Group and in its 8th academic year in 2018/2019.

Pupils received 5 x 1-hour compulsory business engagement sessions throughout the year. Each session was delivered by a different business guest whom will provided pupils with insight into the world of work across different sectors, information about a variety of careers and career pathways. Through support and advice from business role models, pupils learned invaluable employability skills which they can transfer and develop in their future career, and ultimately become more employable.

After each business session, pupils were supported to complete 5 employability portfolio tasks. Throughout the 5 tasks pupils mapped their career path, completed a financial budget, tidied up their appearance on social media, wrote a CV and cover letter and learned how to prepare for interview.

The programme completed a Mock Interview Day, where pupils who engaged with all business sessions and completed their employability portfolio were given the opportunity to have a mock interview with a real business guest at an external venue.

In 2018/2019 there were 76 schools and over 12,200 pupils involved in the programme with 95 different businesses signed up to deliver sessions.
